What is the Dog Age Calculator?
The old 'multiply by 7' rule is a myth — dogs age very rapidly in their first couple of years, then slow down. This calculator uses a formula derived from comparing DNA methylation ('epigenetic clock') aging patterns between dogs and humans, published in a 2020 study.
How to use it
- 1 Enter your dog's age in years.

Limitations
- •This formula is derived from Labrador retrievers specifically and is a population-level approximation — individual dogs and breeds (especially very large or very small breeds) age at different rates. Not a substitute for veterinary guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Is 'one dog year equals seven human years' accurate?
No — that's a popular myth. Dogs mature much faster than humans in their first two years and then age more slowly, which is why formulas based on real biological aging data give very different (and more accurate) results.
