What is the Downtime Cost Calculator?

This calculator gives a simple lost-revenue estimate for an outage — a common input for building the business case for reliability investment (uptime SLAs, redundancy, incident response).

How to use it

  1. 1 Enter your average revenue per hour of normal operation.
  2. 2 Enter how long the outage lasted (or is expected to last).

Worked examples

Limitations

  • Only counts direct lost revenue — doesn't include reputational damage, SLA penalties, support costs, or customer churn, which are often larger in practice.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use total revenue or just revenue from the affected service?

Use revenue attributable to whatever the outage actually affects — if only checkout is down, use checkout revenue per hour, not total company revenue.
