How to Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit Without a Calculator

The exact Celsius-to-Fahrenheit formula, a fast mental-math approximation for everyday use, and why the two scales share exactly one temperature.

Celsius and Fahrenheit are the two temperature scales most people encounter regularly, and converting between them is common enough — checking a weather forecast, reading an oven dial, understanding a fever reading — that it’s worth knowing both the exact formula and a fast mental shortcut for everyday use.

The exact formula

Celsius to Fahrenheit: F = C × 9/5 + 32. Fahrenheit to Celsius, rearranged: C = (F − 32) × 5/9. A 20°C day converts to 20 × 9/5 + 32 = 36 + 32 = 68°F. Normal human body temperature, 37°C, converts to 37 × 9/5 + 32 = 66.6 + 32 = 98.6°F — the widely known figure, and a good way to sanity-check that you’ve applied the formula correctly.

A fast mental-math approximation

For a quick estimate without a calculator, doubling the Celsius value and adding 30 gets close: F ≈ C × 2 + 30. Using the 20°C example: 20 × 2 + 30 = 70°F — close to the exact 68°F, off by only 2 degrees, genuinely good enough for a quick “roughly how warm is that” read. The approximation works because 9/5 (1.8) is close to 2, and the small systematic overestimate this introduces happens to roughly offset itself against 32 versus 30 in the everyday temperature range most people actually think in (roughly 0-40°C) — it drifts further from exact at more extreme temperatures, but for everyday weather and cooking-adjacent temperatures, it’s a genuinely useful shortcut worth having memorized.

The one temperature where both scales agree

There’s exactly one temperature where Celsius and Fahrenheit show the identical number: −40°C equals exactly −40°F. Setting the two formulas equal to each other and solving confirms this is the only crossing point — every other temperature reads as two different numbers on the two scales, with Fahrenheit reading numerically higher than Celsius above this single crossing point (since Fahrenheit degrees are smaller — 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees per 1 Celsius degree — and the scales are offset by the +32 constant).

Why the two scales exist at all

Celsius (originally centigrade) is defined around water’s physical properties: 0°C is water’s freezing point, 100°C is its boiling point at standard atmospheric pressure, a clean, decimal-friendly reference that’s exactly why Celsius is the standard scale for scientific work and the default in most of the world. Fahrenheit’s zero point and scale are set from a different, more historically idiosyncratic reference (originally based on a brine solution’s freezing point and, separately, an approximation of human body temperature), which is why its numbers don’t align as cleanly with water’s freezing and boiling points — 32°F and 212°F respectively, rather than the clean 0 and 100 Celsius provides.

Fahrenheit’s practical advantage, often cited by people used to it, is finer everyday granularity — each Fahrenheit degree represents a smaller temperature change than each Celsius degree, meaning whole-number Fahrenheit readings describe outdoor comfort with a bit more resolution without needing decimals, which is part of why Fahrenheit remains the everyday standard in the United States even as Celsius dominates scientific and international use elsewhere.
